I was most touched by the presents from Mare and Kieno, my young neighbours at the Kunstpunkte. They helped make so many roses, postcards and seed packets. To my great delight, their work became increasingly creative, particularly as the days progressed. They couldn't speak English, and my German was almost non-existent, so that we had to find other ways to communicate. We learned words and phrases, and I discovered I could keep a 'conversation' going with a mere six words - 'gut, ja, sehr gut, bravo and danke schön."
