Exchange – I am organising an exchange of flowers, seeds, postcards or plants to take place in each location. This exchange acts as a means of engaging local audiences as well as forming the foundation for communication and networking. The nature and number of exchanges varies with each place. In May, June and July 2006 people in Shetland and the village of Roydon, outside London, particpated in a number of postcard, plant and seed exchanges. Pupils in schools from these locations exchanged seeds and a few began to email each other as a result. I have also started to keep an “Exchange Log” in each location. Participants can also choose to join a Roseland Mailing List and thus become part of a Roseland network.
Souvenirs – I am making some Roseland Souvenirs. These are a combination of generic Roseland souvenirs as well as souvenirs specific to each location. Through research I have learned that there are many ‘Roselands’ throughout the world, including towns and villages, regions, housing developments, shops and even a famous music and dance venue in New York City. I wish to make reference to these in this material. The souvenirs are available for sale and exchange.
Architectural and Structural – I am trying to use a form of garden architecture, tool or accessory – such as the shed, summerhouse or gazebo; wheelbarrow; umbrella or parasol - in each location, whether literally or symbolically. Acting as a ‘holding’ form, I feel these structures possess unique qualities that reflect and respond to the spaces and communities in which I am working.
